A View on Retirement

       Tellico Lake
If you would have told me ten years ago that I would be living in Loudon, Tennessee, I would have said, “No way”. Well, a retirement and a second marriage later that is exactly where I find myself. I now live in Tellico Village in Loudon, Tennessee.
Tellico Village is a planned community along the 16,000-acre Tellico Lake. The village offers beautiful lots and homes, three golf courses, fishing and boating, a recreation center with an indoor pool, tennis courts, etc. It is only 35 minutes from downtown Knoxville and is also close to the Great Smoky Mountains.

We built a nice but modest home here, and while it is not on the lake or on a golf course, it is surrounded by large trees. It sits on a hillside so our screened in deck on the back of the house is like a tree house in the summer. Put yourself in a chase lounge on my deck in the late afternoon with maybe a splash of Sazerac Rye over ice with birds singing all around and you will experience a peace that passes understanding.

Take a walk on a path in the woods and you will no doubt hear the raucous chatter of pileated woodpeckers. Take a drive and you will see lake and mountain vistas. In winter when I cross Fort Loudon Bridge coming home from shopping, it is not unusual to see snow on the Smoky Mountains off in the distance. If you leave early in the morning, you may see steam coming off the lake or a herd of white tailed deer running and leaping over a fence or shrubs with unparalleled grace. Often I have seen a great blue heron sitting on a low hanging branch over the lake or flying in a pterodactyl-like splendor against the blue sky.

For some reason my eyes and ears are more open here. Being retired, I live more relaxed. I like the feel of nature close around me. I feel at home.
